The Era of Addictive Desires

The era where anything is just one click away, the era where everyone has everything, the epoch where even pets have their phones and shows, we live in a generation that is too sweet until we get into talking about the darker side, the side which involves the incognito mode of our lives. Welcome to the age that is home to all the desires we are addicted to. In this particular piece, I will be talking about harsh realities, most of which we might know or might have been in denial of. I believe acceptance is the first step to improvement and change!

I will state stats, and stats say that in 2018, 270 million people were reportedly involved in illegal drug abuse. That is the reported part! The actual numbers must be at least thrice. We all know how drugs and their abuse affect us yet people are addicted to them, drugs become like a part of their routine, and people can not overcome it. Drug withdrawal and relapse are something only very strong-willed people can overcome. Factually people addicted to drugs are not strong-willed. If you have not seen a drug addict before, I think I must out sketch them. They have dark circles around their eyes like black holes, their eyes are all red as if all the veins in them popped off, their black chapped lips have white lines, they have no sense of direction, color, person, time, or anything around them. These people are like zombies feeding on drugs. I agree not everyone would reach such a horrifying stage, but over the past years, I have seen people who were all sober and amusing turning into these zombies. The craze of making smoke rings is another cause of this addiction in my eyes.

If you are anticipating me to lecture some people based on age group on this issue, then that is a total no! No age group, no gender,  no economical sector, and no country could keep out from the vicious mist of addiction. It engulfs everyone without any condition. On this note, I will be switching to another petrifying addiction: “the addiction of carnal desires”. I agree and understand that yearning for another human is natural and humane but what we are heading towards is too dangerous to even think about! Let me start with experiences that I have had in the past, which I have been too afraid to talk about because maybe I was not well reasoned back then.

Tell me, what would you do if someone confessed sort of sexual abuse in front of you when you were very young? You would probably do what I did, sit quietly, listen to them, and try to understand what just happened. There is no clear report on how many people are porn addicts and what they do due to it, but if you go about general internet surfing, you can see how families have been ruined, how childhoods have been ruined, how lives have been ruined because of this. I remember a little boy, who was maybe three or four, studying in junior kindergarten. He was all quiet while on the bus when we were returning home. That was just the opposite of his usual self, so I went near him and asked him and what he told me was simply something I could not believe. He told me so elaborately that I knew he was not making up things or lying. He told me how some older boys in the washroom manhandled him and his privates. He was just three. Not just this, a ten-year-old girl was all shocked when her relative physically and sexually abused her while she was asleep. While I was once having a conversation with my brother, I was made aware of how children who were just second-graders, were already indulged in seeing porn, older children made them see it. These were just some cases of mental, physical, and sexual abuse. I have still refrained from talking about “rapes”. Rapes have become so common these days that no one even bothers to register all of them. Or let us say that if all these incidents start going into registers, there will be no trees left.

Why do you think this is happening?

Was this not there since the beginning of time?

Infidelities, porn addiction, unhealthy sexual fantasies, sexual abuse, rapes, why do you think they have increased now??

They have not increased now! It is just that things have become very open, and now we can see everything. These things have been there in the past as well, and all we have done is to keep quiet just like I did back then! Everyone has been voiceless about it, until now when people are opening up. Young and delicate children have caught their fathers and mothers cheating on their spouses, they have cried out their eyes and hearts, unable to decide to open up for what they have seen or what have happened to them just because they love how their family has been and because they do not want to break that thin layer of ice above the deep trench of freezing water.

We certainly can not impose anything on anyone but we can think and try to change ourselves and other people around us. I am not condemning the requirement and need for erotica. But let us remember that it is made for making love and not to ruin anyone. Where addiction to drugs is draining out people physically, addiction to porn is finishing people mentally. With the generation we are in, think about it, are you and I not responsible for anything happening? Could we do anything to stop it? I think we all know deep down that the answer is YES!

How about next when we see little kids who are close to us, we talk to them? We certainly can not filter all that is bad as the internet has 90% of things that we want to filter. But we can certainly teach better. Hesitating in not talking about these things makes young people curious. And for adults, it gives them some short-term pleasure, and a sense of secrecy, as well as sense of freeness adds fuel to it. Adults think they are adults and they can do anything. Often “change in love interests” is considered as the reason for infidelity.

Let’s ask ourselves if it is a change in love interest or a change in sexual interests? Can’t we become a bit more decent when we discuss people? Consider people as humans and not objects. The whole environment is so scary if you see this side of “the one-click away” era. Let’s be there when people need us. Let us try to let the innocence play around us and not put little lives in a situation where they have no clue. The change is in our hands.

I know we all have been through such situations. If I sit to count such instances in my life, there would be around ten that were seriously bad and they started since my kindergarten. I know the whole dilemma, disgust, helplessness, endless nights, and sobs contemplating on how and why. Let us try changing ourselves and the people around us for the better. Not just putting hashtags on social media and screaming injustice.

To love ourselves and the people around us, let us cheer up and say no to drug addiction and porn addiction. Let us create and nurture humans out of love and affection, and not some zombies and perverts!

  1. Amazing.... I have no words that will justify your writing power...You can make people laugh and cry through your writing...Considering the topic of today being so sensitive you analyzed it so clearly...you pointed out the harsh reality...and also provided a solution for those...I wish there was a system or a rule...where sexual abusers and rapists are punished in such a severe way that they shudder at even the thought of committing this henious crime again..
